(SportsRadio 610) - Another Texans loss drops the team to 2-12-1.
The pursuit for the No. 1 overall pick is still intact. Here are some observations from the game:
1. Congratulations to the Gorilla Meat Tailgaters for being the HEB Tailgaters of the year. There was a lot of competition, but they won the whole thing with their spirit, legendary grub and consistency each Sunday.
2. This was the emptiest stadium in franchise history. This team needs the first pick, a new coach and new uniforms more than anything.
3. Jeff Driskel coming up short on the fourth down quarterback sneak on the Texans' first drive could go down as the biggest, most impactful play he has made all season. #KeepTheFirstPick
4. I’d love to hear offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton explain what the point of lining Davis Mills and Driskel out wide is.
5. Trevor Lawrence is the straw that stirs the drink for the Jags, but if they don’t take RB Travis Etienne with their extra first-rounder despite having a rookie that rushed for 1,000 + the previous season, then they aren’t where they are.
6. Desmond King continues to play his ass off despite how bad things have been. It’s a good thing he will be back next season because he’s a winning piece that brings an edge and depth that good football teams need.
7. They really drew up a play for Burkhead on 4th down? This is good for the cause of getting the number one pick, but laughable because they would’ve done that even if this game were meaningful.
8. This was a blah game with the best possible result and will potentially go a long way in rebuilding this franchise.
9. Mills must’ve had a craving for hospital food with the way he just stopped on the sidelines on that third down scramble in the third quarter.
10. Every Texans coach going back to King Bill is really weird with when they decide to kick 50+ yard field goals with Ka'imi Fairbairn. He booted one from 56 today and indoors anything near 50 seems worth an attempt. Sometimes coaches punt in that situation, other times they attempt the try, even indoors. It’s the damnest thing.
11. Jalen Pitre is putting together a really nice rookie season. Tackling will be something he needs to improve, but he has been solid. In fact, Nick Caserio's first-round picks have the most questions heading into next season.
12. Lovie Smith should be coaching his final game in Indianapolis. I actually think he was an ok choice for this season, but this needs to be it if taking the next step is the top priority. Unlike the last two seasons, the job is appealing. There’s no more Deshaun cloud, no more POS (Person Of Service) Jack Easterby, draft equity is high, finances are as good as they’ve been in a while and ownership is progressing and open to change.
13. With that said, the No. 1 pick makes this job the most appealing and maximizes buzz around town. They need it.
14. Mills threw the ball as bad as he has all season and he’s been one of the worst quarterbacks in the league. He had some BAD misses.
15. The Texans love the ghost of Rex Burkhead.
16. The Texans need to go all-in on multiple running backs this off-season. By any means necessary. The state of the position minus Dameon Pierce is embarrassing.
17. Let’s get the number one pick in Indy! Here’s to better days!
