Locker: Texans should consider benching Davis Mills

(SportsRadio 610) - What a day in Houston sports. An embarrassment of riches with a two-piece combo, with the Texans and Astros playing on national stages at the same time.

The Astros, of course, handled business and took a 3-2 lead over the Philadelphia Phillies in the World Series.

But the Texans against the undefeated Philadelphia Eagles? Well, these are some observations from the 29-17 loss:

1. This was easily the most opposing team gear I’ve seen compared to the amount of Texans fans in attendance. Eagles fans were literally telling Texans fans, “Welcome to Philly” before the game.

2. It’s good to see Phillip Dorsett involved in the offense and used effectively, but kind of a shame Brandin Cooks needed to quit on the team for it to happen.

3. Teagan Quitoriano’s grab was one of the nice red zone grabs of the season. Heck, I can’t remember too many. What’s up with Texans tight ends scoring in their first action this season? Howard, Akins and now him. Establishing a tight end that can contribute after this year and further along would be very beneficial. TQ is the youngest in the group so he’s a prime candidate.

4. The battle red gear was solid. Should be a normal thing.

5. Steven Nelson is a ball player. Hasn’t stopped giving it 100% all season long. Can’t say the same for his former college teammate Brandin Cooks.

6. The Davis Mills TD throw to Chris Moore was the best throw he has made on the run this season.

7. That Slim Thug halftime show with Michael Watts was LEGIT.

8. What a wild, impressive stat.

9. It was smart of the Texans to put on the Astros in the concourse and embrace the best, most beloved team in town. It might seem like common sense, but not sure the Texans would’ve always made this decision.

10. I’ll be honest, after the Mills INT I got lost in the Astros game and the Verlander gutsy performance for a moment. When I looked back at the field of play Eagles tight end Dallas Goedert was flexing.

11. The Texans tempo at the end of the game was lackluster. They either didn’t know they needed two scores, weren't capable of running an uptempo offense or just didn’t care to win the game. Pick one.

12. Mills being benched needs to be considered, or at least discussed internally. He wasn’t awful tonight and showed some good things, but it’s hard to imagine him winning a ballgame.

13. I will say… I felt bad for Mills this week because Cooks left him out to dry with his gutless actions and made him have to speak for him and play without his top receiver.

14. I’m all about the No. 1 Draft Pick so Thursday was a good night and if you bet on the Texans to cover you won money. Good times.
