Move Over White Noise…You Need Brown Noise To Sleep

Sleep

Wicker and Wilde thought all of that noise you can fall asleep to was called "white" noise, like the sound your tv used to make when the station you were watching went dark. Well if you're like us and didn’t know, white noise isn’t the only color coded noise to help you fall asleep.

White is the most familiar of the noises. It’s a sound similar to a fan running. Then there’s pink noise. It’s sounds similar to leave rustling. Brown noise is the latest to make the scene. It is very bassy and sounds kind of like a rumble of thunder.

Dr. Naina Limbekar explains that the colors are actually based on frequencies. “The distinct names that are derived for noises like the white, the pink, and the brown are all referring to how the energy of the sound is distributed over different frequencies.”

As far as which one is best to fall asleep to… that’s up to you. Everyone has a difference preference. There are apps for all of the noises, though.
