This is a great time of year to find a doggy or cat "under" many people’s Christmas trees…Some people know that it's what their family wants and with some extra time off to let an animal, and the family adjust, it's a great idea. But before you give the gift of a pet this holiday season, there are some things you should know.
The ASPCA and veterinarians are sharing the info, and number one suggestion is to not surprise anyone with a pet. Along with that come questions and cost considerations. The American Veterinary Medical Association says “Before bringing a new animal into someone’s life, it’s important to ask: Are you absolutely sure this person wants this specific pet? Are they ready and able to care for the animal for its entire life?”
Here are some things to consider before gifting or getting a pet for the holidays:
- Making sure the living environment is safe and pet-proofed (clutter is a big no-no)
- Finding veterinary care (The Metro Richmond Area has some amazing vets but do you homework to see which fits you best)
- Making sure that there’s appropriate food, bedding, ID tags and toys
- Being financially able to medically care for the pet and provide essentials
- Making sure you can afford grooming or willing to learn how to do it yourself if your new fur baby needs it. Soooo many great videos on YouTube
- Having time and space for high energy dogs to get their exercise regularly
- Factor in time and the needs of other pets or children in the home
In short, there is plenty of planning and consideration to go through before getting a new furry friend. HOWEVER, there are TONS of animals available for adoption - all of whom come with their own personality.
By the way, Rebecca Wilde used to be an adoption specialist! If you have any questions feel free to reach out to her at 1-833-804-9898 Mon - Fri between 5:30a - 10am.
There is one out there that will fit with your family. Just remember they are sentient beings and if you bring one into your home make sure it's forever and not until you tire of it. #AdoptdontShop
