
Television’s biggest night was celebrated at the 2021 Emmy Awards on Sunday.
The 73rd annual Primetime Emmy Awards handed out accolades to the best and brightest shows and stars on the small screen. Big winners included "Ted Lasso," "The Crown," "Hacks" and "Mare of Easttown."

Cedric the Entertainer hosted the evening live from a tented event space near the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles and opened with a star-studded sing-a-long to "Just A Friend" by late rapper Biz Markie.

Cedric's entertaining opening number

Cedric the Entertainer kicked off the 73rd Emmy Awards with a rousing sing-along to Biz Markie’s “Just a Friend” joined by LL Cool J, Rita Wilson, Mandy Moore, Susan Kelechi Watson, Beth Behrs, Annaleigh Ashford, Anthony Anderson, Tracee Ellis Ross, Rita Wilson, Billy Porter, the cast of "Hamilton," among others. The number set the tone for the jovial in-person event following last year's mostly virtual awards ceremony.

"Ted Lasso" wins big

The Apple TV+ series "Ted Lasso" took home Best Comedy Series, as well as wins for Jason Sudeikis (Lead Actor), Hannah Waddingham (Supporting Actress) and Brett Goldstein (Supporting Actor). If you aren’t subscribed yet, consider this a sign.
Debbie Allen receives Governors Award

The actress, choreographer, director, and producer accepted the Governors Award at the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards and became the first Black woman to receive the honor. Allen was chosen “for her unprecedented achievements in television and her commitment to inspire and engage marginalized youth through dance, theater arts and mentorship.” Director Ava DuVernay, Michael Douglas, Ellen Pompeo and Gayle King were all involved in the emotional tribute.

"Queen's Gambit" director's acceptance speech won't end

“Queen’s Gambit” director Scott Frank went viral for refusing to cut his acceptance speech short for winning the award for Outstanding Directing For A Limited Or Anthology Series or Movie for the Netflix series. When the orchestra music started playing as a nudge to speed it up, he showed his annoyance by saying, “Really?” He then continued to rattle off his laundry list of thanks for what seemed like an eternity.

RuPaul makes history

Condragulations are in order to RuPaul who is now the most-awarded Black artist in Emmy Awards history after snatching his 11th trophy. On Sunday, "RuPaul's Drag Race" won Outstanding Competition Series, for which the famed drag queen serves as host and executive producer. Six of Ru’s wins were for hosting the drag competition series, the most recent of which he won at the Creative Arts Emmys last week. We are gooped and gagged over Mama Ru's legendary eleganza!

Netflix's "The Crown" is king

Netflix’s "The Crown" earned a whopping 7 awards, including wins for Olivia Colman (Queen Elizabeth II) and Josh O’Connor (Prince Charles) for Lead Actress and Lead Actor in a Drama Series. The Netflix hit also took top honors for Outstanding Drama Series. Whether on television or real life, America just can’t get enough of the royal family.
