Handler took to social media just yesterday [7/20] to announce her split from Koy. Her post featured a heartfelt message accompanied by a video the couple took together as they were readying to celebrate their one-year anniversary.

“I’m really happy to be handling a break-up in an honest way for the first time in my life,” Handler shared of her approach to confirming the news some outlets were already beginning to leak. “Instead of distracting, deflecting and doing all these things to be like, ‘I’m fine! I’m fine!’”

The comedian shared the couple has been split for about a month but took some time to let motions simmer before going public.

“We split about a month ago and I figured we could just reconvene with everything kind of cooled down and I just figured it was time,” she said of her decision to address the decision publicly. “He’s got a big movie coming out and I did not want him to be standing on the red carpet answering questions about me in his big moment. Jo pretty much takes my lead on things, I figured I better… meet the moment and actually tell everybody how I really feel instead of ignoring not — I hate that.”

Handler “meeting the moment” consisted of a touching Instagram post to Koy, thanking him for the love he showed her and all the ways he changed her life.

“I think when you’re in the pain, the most important thing you can do is just love out, give it away…. I needed to just give him love.” Chelsea said of her decision to share the news in such a vulnerable way.

“You process this differently as a man and a woman — obviously — and I really thought he needed to hear those things and I really thought I needed to say them so everyone knows no on cheated or anything like that. It just didn’t work out.”

Hear Chelsea discuss more details surrounding the break-up in the newest episode of the We Can Do Hard Things podcast, available now.

Glennon Doyle’s We Can Do Hard Things podcast features raw discussion with Doyle and her sister, Amanda, about some of life’s biggest struggles.  In an effort to come together and help each other through the pair share their own hardships as they help others so each listener can live lighter, braver, and less alone.
