Who is hosting this year’s show?

Jimmy Kimmel is stepping down from his hosting duties to make way for Cedric the Entertainer.

“The Neighborhood” star had plenty of practice as he previously hosted the American Music Awards, the Critics Choice Television Awards, the NAACP Image Awards, the Soul Train Awards and the TV Land Awards.

The 57-year-old told people that he’s going to open with a “big, fun number” to open the show that also includes some sketches.
He is the first solo Black host since Bryant Gumbel in 1997. “Saturday Night Live” comedian Michael Che also co-hosted with Colin Jost back in 2018.

Who are this year’s nominees?

“The Crown” on Netflix received 24 nominations and might be the first streaming service series to win top drama. It’s tied with Disney+’s “The Mandalorian,” which also scored 24 nominations. “Ted Lasso” on Apple TV+ got 20 nominations, while HBO’s “Lovecraft Country” snagged 18. Disney+ also racked up 23 nominations for “WandaVision”, along with 7 for “Hamilton.”

Newcomers like “The Boys” and “Bridgerton” will be competing for Best Drama Series.

Courtney Cox also finally scored a well-deserved Emmy nomination for “Friends” nearly two decades later.

HBO Max leads with 130 total nods, Netflix tails with 120, and Disney+ comes in third with 71.

Will there be a red carpet?

The Television Academy revealed that the 2021 ceremony will restrict the number of people allowed on the red carpet, especially production staff and media outlets, reports Deadline.

Vendors and camera crews will have to show proof of vaccination on the premises and will also need to test negative for COVID-19.

"Out of an abundance of caution and for the safety of Emmy nominees, guests and media, the number of production personnel and staff must be limited at this year's 73rd Emmy Awards," the organization said. The Academy added that "there will be a very limited red carpet for talent arrivals," with only several media outlets allowed.

Will there be a live audience?

Unlike last year’s virtual show sans audience, this year’s Emmys will be held in-person at a single venue with an small in-person audience made up of guests and nominees.

However, precautions will still be in place.

Forbes reports that The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences will require all Emmy Awards attendees to show proof of vaccination.

"It just feels like, almost in a way, like the re-coming out, because after COVID, everything was virtual and now, they have kind of reduced the size of it," Cedric told PEOPLE.

"But with COVID, we reduced the size down," he continued. "But there will still be people in the room. So I think that had me a little, say, nervous if you will, to think about like, 'Oh, I'm the guy that's bringing it back out.' This is how we set the mark. So I think that that's the only place where I feel like there's pressure, but I plan on having a good time."

The 2021 Emmy Awards air Sunday, Sept. 19 at 8pm ET on CBS. Follow live coverage the night of the event on Audacy.com.
