When Ja Rule and Fat Joe took on a VERZUZ Battle at Madison Square Garden’s Hulu Theater on Sept. 14, fans were not expecting that exes, Ashanti and Nelly would both be reunited as well.

Ja Rule and Fat Joe both brought along their most famous friends and collaborators to help them dominate the rap battle. Ashanti joined Ja Rule, singing some of her own tracks and performing “What’s Luv?” with the rapper.
However, Nelly was on Fat Joe’s side and helping him take the VERZUZ Battle. Once done performing with Fat Joe, Nelly crossed over to the other team, to get a hug from his ex, Ashanti. Right as Nelly was leaning in to hug the “Foolish” singer, the cameras cut away, leaving fans dying to know if the former couple embraced.
In 2003, Nelly and Ashanti met at a GRAMMYs press conference and the two Hip Hop/ R&B stars began dating shortly after that meeting. The duo was together for ten years before breaking up in 2014. While not many details were shared about the couple’s split, Ashanti spoke about a lack of trust leading to the demise of their relationship.
In 2015 she explained, “I think sometimes when people have their own insecurities, it allows them to act out of character. I’ve been betrayed. I’m not a big fan of people being cowards. I’m in a different place now.”
In 2019, during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live, Ashanti told Andy Cohen, “I honestly haven’t seen him since we broke up.”
It is not clear if their appearances at VERZUZ was the first time the exes were seeing each other since their 2014 split. But, fans want to see more of Hip Hop’s former power couple back together again.
