American Idol shocked fans, and even one judge, with what host Ryan Seacrest called the “biggest shakeup in Idol history.”
Here’s the lowdown. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic shutting down production, contestants from Season 18 never had the opportunity to perform on the main stage as coronavirus concerns forced contestants to perform remotely.
In an attempt to give those contestants a “true” American Idol experience, the show is bringing back ten “familiar faces” from Season 18 to compete for a spot in Season 19’s top 10.
“Those finalists never got the true experience of the big stage, the lights, the cameras, the hair, the makeup, the wardrobe, that fun stuff, Kris Pooley and the band backing them up,” Seacrest said.
Immediately, the decision was met with backlash as Katy Perry called the process “kind of unfair.”
Season 18 contestants that are a part of “The Comeback” include Cyniah Elise, Nick Merico, Aliana Jester, Franklin Boone, Faith Becnel, Arthur Gunn, DeWayne Crocker Jr., Makayla Phillips, Olivia Ximines, and Louis Knight.
The show will be taking a week off due to the 2021 Oscars, which are set to air this Sunday, April 25 at 8PM ET on ABC. The voting window for “The Comeback” is open until April 26.
