The show featured a new round where each judge anonymously selected a song they wanted to see each contestant perform. The contestants were presented with the three song choices and picked their favorite, not knowing which judge requested it. After their performance each artist guessed which judge selected their song. Harmless, right? Wrong!
It was all fun and games until one contestant, Noah Thompson, who is a simple Country boy from Kentucky took the stage. Thompson was presented the option to perform John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads” or one of two John Mayer songs, “Bigger Than My Body” or “Heartbreak Warfare.”
Thompson selected “Heartbreak Warfare,” which was a challenge for him as he’d never heard the song. After an impressive performance, Noah was asked by host, Ryan Seacrest which judge he thought selected the song and he guessed Katy Perry — Bless his heart. Guess he really doesn’t know that much about John Mayer.
Perry’s response was hilarious as she replied, “Noah, I feel like maybe you should Wikipedia me. I can’t talk anymore!” She then proceeded to fake faint behind the judges table and accuse fellow judges Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie for selecting Mayer songs to make her squirm. “These guys are against me,” she screamed.
Perry famously started dating Mayer in 2012 after her highly-public divorce from Russell Brand. The pair was together about a year before splitting due to “busy schedules.”
Although it was clearly an embarrassing moment, Katy handled herself well teasing, “Who is going to pay for my extra hour of therapy?” Before complimenting Mayer and Thompson. “Honestly, you sounded great. It's a great song. [Mayer] is a great artist. You're a great artist.”
Welcome to showbiz, Noah!
The episode ended with Katy and Luke tying for the most selected songs which meant they got to save a contestant from the bottom two, which ended up being powerhouse Lady K and rocker Tristen Gressett. The two agreed on on saving saving Lady K, who advances to the next week of competition.
