The latest episode of Idol was a fierce competition from the Top 5 contestants. HunterGirl, Leah Marlene, Fritz Hager, Noah Thompson, and Nicolina were all vying for the opportunity to make it to the next round and showcased their talents to prove why they’ve made it this far.

Carrie Underwood served as the guest mentor this week as contestants performed her songs and songs selected by the former Idol winner. As always, we’ll give you a heads up that spoilers are ahead in case you’re not caught up with the show. After each contestant performed their first song, FINNEAS took the stage to treat viewers to a wonderful rendition of his single “Naked.”

For their second performance, each contestant was tasked with choosing a song that host Ryan Seacrest described as “an epic encore.” Marlene chose “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)” by Journey, HunterGirl selected “Girl Crush” by Little Big Town, Hager took on “Youngblood” by 5 Seconds of Summer, Nicolina chose “All I Ask” by Adele, and Thompson performed “Working Man” by Larry Fleet.

Judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan knew it was a tough path ahead as they waited to see who America voted into the finale. As the results came in, the fans voted Hager and Nicolina as the bottom two, meaning HunterGirl, Noah Thompson, and Leah Marlene advanced to the finale.

Marlene fell down in disbelief upon hearing the news as Katy Perry had a shocked expression on her face as well. The grand finale of American Idol is set to take place next Sunday, May 22 at 8PM ET.
