Last April, a clip of an unaired pilot was leaked featuring Kiely Williams (formerly of The Cheetah Girls and 3LW) and Farrah Franklin (formerly of Destiny's Child whose luggage was infamously sent to her). The shady clip (seen below) went viral and many including Gabrielle Union and Oscar-winning director, Matthew A. Cherry were among those demanding for the show to see the light of day.
Renowned reality show producer, Carlos King, took to Twitter to announce the show "Girl Group Show" he created almost a decade ago will finally be airing on BET.
He told the Associated Press, "I felt that girl groups never got its just do... and I, as a content creator, wanted to... educate the masses on who I feel are the forgotten sisters of music. I wanted to pay homage to that industry and really give these women an opportunity to share their stories and their struggles."
The Encore will bring together Williams, Nivea, Aubrey O'Day (Danity Kane), Pamela Long (Total), Irish Grinstead & LeMisha Fields (702), Shamari DeVoe (Blaque) and Felisha & Fallon King (Cherish). The nine women will live under one roof to record one album as an R&B supergroup.
BET's Executive VP of unscripted programming and development, Tiffany Lea Williams expressed, "fueled with passion and drive, the leading ladies of BET Presents The Encore prove that lightning can absolutely strike twice, and we can’t wait to share the next phase of their journey with our viewers. This series will bring fans behind the scenes in the music-making process, reconnect them with some of their favorite chart-topping singers and deliver unforgettable stories from celebrities they love." With personalities like these, we're sure the drama isn't too far from the mix.
Watch it all unfold on June 9th at 10PM ET, only on BET.
