LISTEN NOW: Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor on 'Lucky'

Lucky, stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Annette Bening, Timothy Olyphant, and more, and is based on the New York Times bestselling novel and Reese’s Book Club pick of the same name by Marissa Stapley. The series stars Taylor-Joy as a young woman who left behind the life of crime she was raised in years ago but must now embrace her darker, criminal side one final time in a desperate attempt to escape her past.

Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, who you may know from such films as King Richard, Ray, and The Color Purple, sat down with Romeo International to share what it was like portraying a cop in action.

Are you pulling from someone or did you have to step out of yourself to find the character of Agent Billie Rand?

"I think with Billy, I always feel like as a Black woman, my relationship with law enforcement in this country is not a trusting one. When I'm playing someone who is in law enforcement, that comes with it. So I have to believe, I have to justify what I'm doing. I have to give myself a sense of justice because I know that law enforcement in this country is based on law and Black folks have suffered because of that. So I have to look at what I'm doing as I'm not chasing these people because they broke the law. I'm chasing these people because I need justice."

Lucky is now streaming on Apple TV.
