Snoop Dogg is known for his prolific career in the Hip Hop world, but the Long Beach, California native, who has had a long-time love affair with regional Mexican music, is stepping into the genre with the help of one of its biggest bands.

This Friday, the rapper joined forces with Banda MS and released “Que Maldición” (what a curse), a banda fusion that seamlessly blends traditional horns with Snoop’s distinctive bass and drum beats.

Lamenting the curse of missing a former lover, Snoop smoothly switches from English to Spanish on his verses, rapping “I’m here whenever you say that you need me, si me necesitas I’ll arrive believe me, D-O- double G soy tu perrito.”

The collab follows the February announcement that Snoop Dogg and Banda MS are teaming up for a joint concert in Ontario, California in July, but the relationship between the two goes back years.

In 2016 when the Chicago Cubs knocked the L.A. Dodgers out of the running for the World Series, Snoop dedicated Banda MS’ “Tengo Que Colgar” to “all the Dodgers fans in the house” in an Instagram post where he sadly smoked a blunt and sang along to the lyrics that translate to “why are you like this? From the bottom of my heart I don’t wish you ill.”

Snoop Dogg also went to high school with Jenni Rivera, a regional Mexican star whose career was cut short when she died in a plane crash in 2012. He attended her funeral, and from time to time will post tributes to her on social media.

In an interview last year, he said “her legacy continues to go on and on… it’s sad that she’s gone, but her music lives on so you can still get a chance to feel her energy. And I love playing her music, it gets me feeling good. I feel good when I’m riding in my car and I hear her voice.”
