Firstly - if you don’t already, you should know cowboy boots and just western vibes in general have made a serious comeback. But, more than just abiding by the current trend, with her new collection Beyoncé is linking the street fashion world to her Houston roots brining to light the impact of Black men and women of American Western culture, and honoring the style and influence of Black cowboys and cowgirls while doing so.
Speaking to the Houston Chronicle, Beyoncé explained both the research based and personal inspirations behind this next collection. “After understanding where the word ‘cowboy’ came from, I realized how much of the Black, Brown and Native cowboy stories are missing in American history. I am proud to represent Houston culture, my roots and all the people who understand fried Snickers and fried turkey legs. The collection merges fashion with Western tradition and features buckles, chaps and a cow print in an unexpected purple-and-brown mix. There are wide-leg denim pants and bodysuits, a denim tracksuit and bucket hat, a canvas waist bag and even a cowboy hat, among other pieces.”
Bey kicked the collection announcement off with a visual teaser on August 6, featuring actor Glynn Turman, alongside his granddaughter MelJulie Siegel. Known for roles in A Different World, The Wire and Cooley High, Turman who also happens to be cowboy in real life and owner of his own horse ranch, discussed the legacy of Black cowboys on horseback and his love of horses since a young age and how it affected his grown up decisions.
Also featured in the fire campaign vid - Houston rapper’s Monaleo and Tobe Nwigwe. As well as Snoh Alegra, Orville Peck and actual ropers Emily Diana Alba and Julian Jacob Alamillo, just to name a few.
Set to be release on adidas.com on August 19 and select stores globally the following day, the extensive collection promises to include 58 pieces of women’s and unisex apparel, five shoes and 13 accessories.
