Directed by Domee Shi, it stars newcomer Rosalie Chiang as Mei, Sandra Oh as her mother Ming, and Orion Lee her dad, Jin.

The coming-of-age film, set in the early 2000s, will centre around 13-year-old Meilin “Mei” Lee, who has the unfortunate quirk of turning into a red panda whenever she feels a strong emotion. Which if you we’re a teen in the early 00’s already know, that possibly the strongest feelings you could have at the stage in your life were directly reserved for your favorite boy band (which for us was 100% *NSYNC).

“We needed our character Mei to be obsessed with something that her mom would not approve of,” Shi said of the main character. “Boy bands were the first step into the world of boys for a lot of girls that age. The guys were all super pretty, polished, soft and loving, and they had of a way of bringing girls and their besties together. Plus, I thought it’d be really cool to create an animated boy band.”

Enter Billie and FINNEAS. While Swedish composer Ludwig Göransson (“Black Panther,” “The Mandalorian”) handled the films score, the three tracks Eilish and her producer brother contributed (one of which is titled “Nobody Like U” and briefly featured in the films trailer) were specifically created for 4*Town, the movies’ fictional boy band.

“When we first started talking about Billie Eilish and FINNEAS — back before they’d won a billion GRAMMYs — we could see then how they had their finger on the pulse,” said producer Lindsey Collins. “We were big fans. We met with them and pitched this crazy idea of a boy band, asking if they’d be interested in writing and producing the songs. They were.”

Additional cast members include Wai Ching Ho who voices Mei’s Grandma. While her tight-knit group of friends are voiced by Ava Morse as Miriam, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan as Priya, and Hyein Park as Abby.

Arriving March 11, 2022, check out the brand-new trailer for “Turning Red” below, which yay! also features a track from a very own favorite boy band.
