Despite some recent dramz, Billie Eilish has had an incredible few years, skyrocketing to fame seemingly overnight in 2019 with her debut album When We All Fall Asleep Where Do We Go? Now, a Coachella set, GRAMMY wins, magazine cover shoots, a canceled world tour, and pandemic lockdown later - we find ourselves less than one week away from the release of the young singer-songwriters second album, Happier Than Ever.

So, ahead of this next major milestone, Billie sat down with Vevo to break down what to expect from the sound and feel of the record. And with a handful of singles from the record already out in the universe, we already know that the album is a bit of a shift from that Billie sound we’re used to.
Despite it’s major success, while writing her debut album, Billie admitted to having feelings of anxiety. So the goal with this album was to make something that felt transcended in time. “I wanted to make a very timeless record,” she explained. “That wasn’t just timeless in terms of what other people thought, but really just timeless for myself. I gathered a lot of inspiration from a lot of older artists that I grew up loving. Mostly Julie London, and a lot of Frank Sinatra, Peggy Lee — and then, the songs on the album are all over the place. Very versatile, and different to one another, but also very cohesive. Which is a big goal for me.”
Billie’s intentions for Happier Than Ever were clear to her, and for that matter so is her ideal vision of how she would like listeners to experience the music for the first time. Which uncoincidentally is a little bit old school, just like many of her inspos for the album like Ol’ Blue Eyes.
“You can listen however you want,” she began. “But I would love — if your car has nice speakers, or your friend’s car has nice speakers — it’s raining, you’re in a nice car with a good sound system. Turn it up, and just recline and close your eyes, and listen. That’s what I hope people will do. But listen however you want, it’s up to you.”
Like she said you can do what you want, but for those up for the suggestion that aren’t expecting rain anytime soon, might we suggest a car wash, or just a really good friend and a water hose. What? You gotta do whatchu gotta do - for you, for Billie and for Ol’ Blue Eyes, but mostly, despite the maudlin setting - do it to feel Happier Than Ever.
