BTS, Ed Sheeran, The Weeknd part of 24-Hour 'Global Citizen Live' special set for September

Global Citizen Live is headed to a screen near you this September and several of your favorites are slated to make an appearance.

Hugh Evans, Global Citizen CEO, is labeling the event “the one” and is considering it the biggest thing they’ve ever done thus far. The 24-hour special will air on September 25 and will broadcast live from six continents. Featured performers include BTSEd SheeranThe Weeknd, Doja Cat, Billie EilishLorde, Metallica, Lizzo and many more.

The goal of the "once-in-a-generation broadcast [and] livestream event" is to "bring the world together to defend the planet & defeat poverty." Other artists who have already been announced include Shawn Mendes, Camila Cabello, H.E.R., Demi Lovato, Coldplay, and Tiwa Savage.

The next wave of announcements are slated to arrive on August 3. In addition to more artist announcements, it'll also be revealed how audiences across the world will be able to tune in. Evans told Variety, that unlike 2020, "this is live-live. This is the whole world, literally and physically tens or hundreds of thousands of people coming together for this moment. This is the biggest thing we’ve ever done by far."

In regards to programming, he mentioned, "the broadcast is incredibly complicated, and we’re going to release specific details on August 3, but I can tell you that there will be a 24-hour live broadcast feed that goes all around the world (where) we’re literally following the sun."

There will also be live audiences all over the world including "a full 60,000 audience in Central Park [and] a full audience in front of the Eiffel Tower in Paris." In a statement, The Weeknd expressed, "It is very important to me to be a part of this historic event to spread awareness and encourage action toward helping the people of Ethiopia during this devastating humanitarian crisis they are faced with. It’ll be an honor to perform and help bring support to these citizens who are suffering so severely."
