Over the weekend, after internet trolls brought her to tears, Lizzo hopped on Instagram Live to share her thoughts and emotions about the incredible amount of negativity she receives, and how it affects her.
Fed up with all the hate and mean things people say about her, Lizzo tearfully expressed, “for the most part, it doesn’t hurt my feelings. I don’t care. I just think when I’m working this hard, my tolerance gets lower, my patience is lower, I’m more sensitive and it gets to me.”
The video eventually made its way to Cardi - Lizzo’s “Rumors” collaborator, after a Twitter fan account posted the recording, leading her to immediately come to her defense, saying:
“When you stand up for yourself they claim your problematic & sensitive. When you don’t they tear you apart until you crying like this. Whether you skinny, big, plastic, they going to always try to put their insecurities on you,” Cardi asserted. "Remember these are nerds looking at the popular table.”
Cardi later hopped back on Twitter to continue to defend Lizzo, as well as the success of their new song (that apparently some people were doubting).
“Rumors is doing great. Stop trying to say the song is flopping to dismiss a woman emotions on bullying or acting like they need sympathy,” she wrote. “The song is top 10 on all platforms. Body shaming and callin her mammy is mean & racist as f***.”
Saying all this now we feel obliged to admit that yes, even we had our less than stellar moments on the playground that we’d rather forget. But, that being said - to blatantly, and anonymously might we add, come for someone on the internet based on nothing but judgement and hate is so 2000 and late, straight up cruel, and beyond not okay. Which hopefully most of us didn’t need Cardi to inform us of.
But for those who might not be so informed, we shall enlighten. As with all troll behavior, whether they retreat back to under their bridge or remain click-clacking their fingers, it remains to be seen that no matter what, those thriving and succeeding - like Lizzo, will always come out on top.
And just in case proof was needed. Letting them know that they didn’t get the best of her, Lizzo took to IG to share a video of herself laughing and smiling alongside the following caption, “Sometimes I get sad… and then I—.”
Moral of the story - stop being mean and listen to “Rumors”
