After its official release last Friday, Chris Young’s new album, Famous Friends, was our official weekend soundtrack. In celebration of the project, Young made a visit to Audacy’s Friday Night Takeover with Rob + Holly to share all the deets on the new album and how he solicited some help from his own “Famous Friends” to help complete it.

With appearances by artists including Shay Mooney of Dan + Shay, Mitchell Tenpenny, Lauren Alaina and Kane Brown, we’re curious, how exactly did he go about getting these friends to join in on the fun?
“Do you just do a mass text?” Holly asked Chris.
“NO!” Chris laughed. “I do not!” He said, laughing. “Whoever responds first gets the spot,” he quipped.
“They were all the first people that I asked,” Chris shared of Kane Brown, Lauren Alaina and Mitchell Tenpenny. “I’m really lucky, I’ve had a lot of luck with that.”
He continued, “There’s only, like, one time I can think of that I asked somebody to be on a song and they couldn’t do it because they had just done something else,” he shared. “So I actually ended up doing that song solo, and I’ll never say which one it was.”
While it’s clear Chris has some really cool Famous Friends in his life already, given the opportunity to add some more, past or present, who would they be?
“I have gone to a Billy Joel concert, but I have never met that guy and I would love to pick his brain about music... He is brilliant!” Chris revealed.
He continued, “I would probably go back and see Keith Whitley perform because I never got to see him play” Chris added when asked who he would chose to connect with if given the opportunity to use a time machine.
With all the talk about stars and fame, Chris is also quick to humble himself sharing stories of his flaws and moments he maybe doesn’t shine quite as bright as when he’s on stage.
“I like to golf, but I’m not any good at it, and I know” Chris shared when asked about his hobbies. “I’m just being honest.”
He continued, “I played Shadow Creek [Golf Course] one time, which is where they did the match with Tiger [Woods] and Phil [Mickelson], and I just went ahead and told the guy, ‘Look, at some point you’re going to be really mad at me [because] I’m going to pick my ball up,’” Chris laughed.
He continued, “Because if it looks like I’m gettin’ to a snowman, like gettin’ to an eight, I’m just going to take the eight and move to the next hole.
Average golf skills aside, we still think Chris is a star and are excited to welcome him as part of the all-star lineup for Audacy’s Stars and Strings Presented by Samsung Galaxy, taking place September 11 at Pier 17 in New York City. Young will join fellow artists Darius Rucker, Zac Brown, Lee Brice, Tenille Arts and Caroline Jones for a night of performances dedicated to honoring heroic first responders, their families, and remembering those lost.
In addition to his Stars & Strings performance, Young has revealed plans for his headlining, Famous Friends Tour. The 13-stop trek will kick-off this fall with special guests Mitchell Tenpenny and Callista ta Clark joining him for a majority of the stops.
