On April 18, a global hunt for clues and codebreakers began across social media after the first Alien Radio tweet read, “Transmission incoming. Standby.”

On April 21 the “transmission” was a series of mystifying videos that featured a pink spinning symbol as viewers heard voices from around the world. Then a cluster of virtual out of home ads cropped up that featured alien-like, glowing pink text, and symbols that appeared all over the world with corresponding coordinates.

If one was to go to the alienradio.fm website clues were also hard to discern. The site was filled with the same jumbled pink Klingon-like symbols and links to the Alien Radio social media accounts.

Fans immediately began to decode all the clues and symbols, sharing hypotheses via social media. One post in the ColdplayXtra Twitter feed theorized, “In case you missed it, or don’t know where to start… It seems Coldplay are coming back on May 7 with #HigherPower Cryptic posters appeared in LDN & NYC w/ messages leading to @alienradiofm From the site, fans decoded the announcement, alleged lyrics & more Its time.”

The release of the band’s potential ninth studio album came after fans boiled it down to this codebreaker that appeared online: “How the code was deciphered 8 characters on the top; that fit Coldplay. Used the P, O, A, Y to fill in the other blanks There was a common symbol, we presumed E It left a few blanks, but it was very clear after the E's were in position COLDPLAY, HIGHER POWER, MAY 7.”

On April 27 the band posted a final mystical graphic containing a loop of the pink alien symbols that read, “locating signals.” The post was simply captioned “aliendradio.fm.”
