Destiny joined Audacy’s Rosa for an extensive conversation about the ups and downs in 2020, “Tomboy,” and of course, that first performance of “West Like.”

Their conversation began with the struggles that Destiny felt during 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic and events of the year made it difficult for her to find inspiration to write. She had already released “Tomboy,” but it had yet to become the hit it is today.

Rogers says that her fans reaching out to her and inquiring about new music is a driving force for her creativity. “I want my fans to be hungry. I always want that,” she said. “I always want them to be like, ‘yo where’s the new music?’ What’s going on?’ Because that motivates me. That’s like, ‘OK they’re waiting, let’s go, let’s move.’”

Destiny admitted she lost her “mojo” in 2020 and started selling sneakers to make sure she didn’t run out of money in LA. “Literally a week later when everything popped off for ‘Tomboy,' I just got so happy. I was like ‘whoa, I have all these new eyes on me.’”

Destiny also recounted the crazy experience she recently had performing “West Like” for the first time in Vegas. “It was 2 AM and I’d never done a 2 AM show in my life,” she says.

“I got on stage and was dancing around on the table on the DJ booth. My foot had stepped on a cord and had unplugged the cord that connects the DJ mixer to the laptop. So, the music completely shuts off.”

Uh oh. Fortunately, Destiny had the perfect recovery. “I looked down and was like, ‘oh shoot, I literally unplugged this with my foot,’” she explains. “So I have to keep going and I sang the song a capella, which made the crowd go crazier. They were screaming when I was singing a cappella, it was still rocking.”

“I’m so happy that happened because that made the performance so much better for me.”
