Justine Bateman is speaking out against the unrealistic beauty standards that pressures many women to undergo cosmetic procedures.
The “Family Ties” star, who portrayed Mallory Keaton on the hit ‘80s sitcom alongside Michael J. Fox, has never had any plastic surgery and is concerned with how prevalent it has become in society.

“Why is the idea that women’s older faces are undesirable, what is the root of all that,” the 55-year-old told Page Six.
“How did we get here and more importantly – and the thing that really bothers me – is how did we get to this point in our current society where cutting your face up, or injecting it, or inserting plastic or whatever is spoken about so matter-of-factly.”
Bateman explores the aggressive ways Hollywood, and society in general, reacts to women aging in her new book “Face: One Square Foot of Skin.”
“We went from, ‘Wow someone getting a face lift is quite unusual!,’ to, ‘It’s not a matter of if, it’s a matter of when,’” she told the outlet. “To me it’s really, it’s like, psychopathic. It’s lunacy, and I don’t like that we’re going along with it without pausing to think about it.”
In addition to “Family Ties,” Bateman starred opposite Julia Roberts in the 1988 film “Satisfaction,” and had roles in various other TV shows like “Men Behaving Badly” and “Desperate Housewives.” She uses her vast experiences in Hollywood to tell vignettes surrounding aging and beauty in her new book.
And while some people may decide to alter their appearance to feel better about themselves, Bateman says getting plastic surgery would only make her feel worse.
“I would not be me,” she told Page Six. “I want to be as confident as humanly possible and if I did it I would be going in the opposite direction.”
Bateman recently made her directorial feature film debut with the 2021 movie "Violet."
