Twenty One Pilots returned with their sixth studio album Scaled And Icy and we’re just as excited to dig into the music as we are decoding their lyrics.

Throughout their career, fans have fallen in love with Twenty One Pilots because of their masterful ability to blend different styles of music and create their own sound. While much of their past work is threaded together by a dense, edgy, exploratory sound, Scaled And Icy is seemingly completely different. The album features a peppy, bright soundscape that marks a new direction for the band.
Take the opening track “Good Day” for example. It’s the perfect summer track as its sunny disposition still retains plenty of elements that make it uniquely Twenty One Pilots.
Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun are no strangers to putting out songs that address challenging issues such as anxiety and loneliness. While Scaled And Icy isn’t an exception to this, it does offer listeners an optimistic message.
Part of that is a product on how the album was recorded as Joseph produced much of it in his home studio during quarantine while Dun engineered the beats from across the country. As a result, Scaled And Icy has been described as “a collection of songs that push forward through setbacks and focus on the possibilities worth remembering.”
It also wouldn’t be a Twenty One Pilots album without hidden messages in the lyrics. Fans had already gone on a hunt for cryptic clues when the album title was announced, but it was later revealed that Scaled And Icy serves as an anagram for “Clancy is dead.”
Clancy was the protagonist of the band’s 2018 record Trench as the anagram as sent fans into a frenzy of speculation.
While album release day is certainly an exciting time, fans can look forward to celebrating the record with the first ever global livestream event taking place tonight at 8PM ET.
