There's a big fat Cuban wedding in Andy Garcia’s future.
The 64-year-old actor will follow in the footsteps of Steve Martin and Spencer Tracy to headline a remake of “Father of the Bride,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The new version is getting a Latinx update and will follow the relationships within a Cuban-American family as they prepare for the wedding of one of their own.
Filmmaker Gaz Alazraki, who helmed Netflix’s “Club de Cuervos,” will direct and Brad Pitt’s company, Plan B, is set to produce. The script is by Matt Lopez, who previously wrote “Race to Witch Mountain” and “Bedtime Stories.”
“I’m very excited to join The Father of the Bride, a beloved film that has brought so much joy to so many over the years and to represent my Cuban culture and heritage in this story,” Garcia said in a statement. “I commend Warner Bros. for their foresight and celebrate this opportunity they have created.”
Nominated for an Oscar for his role in “The Godfather Part III,” Garcia’s recent work includes “Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar,” “Mama Mia! Here We Go Again,” and “Book Club.” In addition, he’s set to appear in the upcoming ABC legal drama “Rebel,” which premieres April 8.
Garcia’s take will be the third version of “Father of the Bride” to hit the big screen. Steve Martin, Diane Keaton and Kimberly Williams starred in the 1991 film and its 1995 sequel, “Father of the Bride Part II.”
The original 1950 film featured Spencer Tracy, Joan Bennet and Elizabeth Taylor.
Garcia’s version will keep with tradition and center around a father of a bride-to-be coping with his daughter’s pending nuptials. Let the comedy and drama ensue!
Further casting or a release date for “Father of the Bride” have yet to be announced.
