In 2019, twenty years after authorities and local officials shut down the widely popular cultural event, it was first revived. According the modern festival Instagram, they pose the question: "Are you a FREAK⁉️," which means "Fearlessly Reliving & Embracing Atlanta's Kulture."
Despite Atlanta not fully adhering to last year's quarantine, the festival didn't take place in 2020. However, for homecoming season 2021, Freaknik is in full effect. In a statement, the team expressed, "it's been a VERY TOUGH 12+ months [...] Like many of you, we are INCREDIBLY excited with the progress we have made, as a country, against this pandemic, and that the world is opening back up! With this progress, we are EXCITED to Announce that the City of #Atlanta have approved outdoor events and FreakNik 2021 will happen in October of this year!"
This year's festivities take place at Morris Brown College from October 8-10 for the 18+ crowd only. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports this year's lineup includes Adina Howard, Project Pat, Lil Scrappy, Ray J, Paul Wall, 95 South, DJ Unk, Field Mob, and more.
Tickets go on sale this Monday at 9am ET via freaknikfest.com and organizers have promised that prices are "more affordable" than in 2019. There will also be an option to stream the festival via omnisplayer.com.
