The Emmy Award-winning documentary The Apollo explores the historical and cultural significance of Harlem’s landmark theater. Located on 125th street, the music hall is a noted venue for African American performers. Brittany and Ronald unpack some of the most memorable performances highlighted in the film and discuss the role the Apollo has played in Black culture.
“It’s so joyful and so much fun to watch,” says Luse. “It uses all of this archival footage and behind the scenes footage with the different production teams at the Apollo, who are trying to put together everything from a live theater performance to Amateur night.” Additionally, The Apollo features interviews with artists like Patty LaBelle, Jamie Foxx, Smokey Robinson, Pharrell Williams and more.
This HBO Docs Club episode includes an engaging conversation with the film’s director, Roger Ross Williams and Kamilah Forbes, the Apollo Theater’s creative head. Forbes also spoke about the stage production of Ta-Nehisi Coates' Between the World and Me, which is featured in the documentary.
