“There was a moment in the writing process of this album I quit trying to write my story and I started trying to write other people’s stories and it changed the entire trajectory of the album,” The 39-year-old shared with fans in an Instagram video just before the album release. “I hope y’all feel that when y’all take the time to listen to it.”
One song already capturing the attention of fans everywhere is “Winning Streak,” which tackles the topic of alcohol addiction head on with powerful lyrics. “I've been standin' in the rain just tryin' to stay dry / I was so ashamed to be in this seat,” Jelly sings. “’Til I met a man who was 20 years clean / He said, 'Everybody here's felt the same defeat' / Nobody walks through these doors on a winning streak.”
“This song is important to me because it shines a light on a subject that isn’t sexy or fun — it’s real and I know it will find people when they need it most,” Jelly said of the tune. “If these lyrics speak to you, I hope they help you out.”
Never afraid to find inspiration in the trenches, Jelly Roll also shares the glory of overcoming with songs like, “Unpretty,” which addresses finding beauty in even the most difficult of pasts. “When we make the choice to change, it’s hard to look back at who we were and the mistakes we made,” he shared while reflecting on the song. “Although it’s unpretty, it’s part of what got us to where we are today.”
With plenty of songs that’ll take you to musical therapy, Jelly balances it all with the feel good anthems like “Get By,” that’ll have you high on life while driving with your windows down. “This one is just an old fashioned honky tonk banger,” he said with a smile. “One of those songs that you sing along to at the top of your lungs while driving down an old back road.”
