Before we begin another year of debate over “Baby, It’s Cold Outside,” John Legend is here to offer you another option.
For the deluxe edition of his A Legendary Christmas album, the singer has teamed up with his fellow judge from The Voice, Kelly Clarkson, to deliver a more consenting edition of the Christmas classic. In a new interview with Vanity Fair, Legend details the new updated lyrics, more appropriate for 2019.
“What will my friends think,” Clarkson sings in the call-and-response tune. “I think they should rejoice,” Legend responds. “If I have one more drink?” answers Kelly. “It’s your body, and your choice,” assures John.

The updated lyrics were created with the help of Natasha Rothwell from HBO’s Insecure, and offer a different version of events from the song many consider out-of-touch and out-of-date. Last year, controversy continued over the song first written in 1944, with several radio stations refusing to play it. It has become somewhat of a cultural lightning rod, with Legend becoming the latest to enter into the mix.
According to Entertainment Weekly, elsewhere Legend offers to call Clarkson a car, rather than insist that she stay, like in the original.
I really can’t stay (baby it’s cold outside)
I’ve gotta go away (I can call you a ride)
This evening has been (so glad that you dropped in)
So very nice (time spent with you in paradise)
My mother will start to worry (I’ll call a car a tell ‘em to hurry)
A Legendary Christmas: The Deluxe Edition from John Legend arrives on November 8, with pre-orders now available.
