Kate Hudson’s acting career has been intertwined with music pretty much since the start, form mingling with rockers as Penny Lane in Almost Famous to her guest spot as the atrocious yet iconic dance instructor Cassandra July on Glee.

The one thing she’s yet to do is share music of her own, but that’s all about to change. During an interview with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show, Kate revealed that she’s been writing music for a while now and is planning to release an album next year.
“I love to sing,” Hudson admitted while discussing their shared experience of roles in Almost Famous. “I feel weird saying it… I’ve been making a record for like a year. It’s so fun.”
While the desire was always there, the urge to actually act upon it and make music came during the pandemic “Every time you’re doing interviews, people are like ‘Do you have any regrets?’ And I’m like, ‘I’m early 40s, not yet,'” she said. “But during Covid, I was like: ‘What am I doing?’”
Sharing that she’s been writing songs for many years, Kate explained now felt like the right time. “I’ve been writing music since I was 19 and I’ve never shared it and so I thought that would be one of my great regrets,” Hudson said. “I have no expectations. I just want to put a record out and so I’m doing it and I’m really excited. I can’t wait.”
Back in April, Hudson started teasing what’s soon to come, with a photo of herself rehearsing, alongside the caption “Finally realized it’s time to say f#%! it and saaaannngg!!!!! #albumincoming.”
Check out everything Kate told Jimmy in the clip above. Oh and in case anyone needed reminding of Hudson’s singing skills, watch her performing a doo-wop cover of Ariana Grande's "7 Rings" on NBC's "That's My Jam" this past January.
