During Monday evening’s episode of American Idol, Perry was performing a rendition of “Teenage Dream,” when her very own “skin-tight jeans” gave way right on cue. And while shreds of Katy’s clothes may have been tattered the artist’s dignity remained gracefully intact.
While performing an impromptu version of the hit 2010 track, Perry sang the line “put your hands on me and my skin tight jeans” and bent over while wearing skin-tight salmon tone leather pants. Just like that, her well-tailored outfit tore exactly on cue, leaving the singer to reveal the malfunction to the Hollywood round finalists.
Luckily, the moment allowed for laughs, of course, not at Perry’s expense. The Idol logo was placed over Perry’s mishap as she joked, “can I get some gaffer tape?” Quickly after requesting the heavy-duty tape, Perry was patched up with a yellow tape cross that kept both her cheeks in check. When the incident first occurred, Perry’s fellow judge, Luke Bryan yelled, “they busted!” Bryan stepped in to give her tape patch a secure pat. Finally, the show’s third judge, Lionel Richie chimed in, “the concert is officially over!”

Shortly after her pant-splitting performance, a-la SpongeBob SquarePants, Katy tweeted the video and wrote, “ima get ur heart racing in my skin-tight jeans on #americanidol. Tune in now for a RIPPING good time” Bryan tweeted back, reminding her that the singing competition show is a “family show.” Perry clapped back with “family, my a**.”
