Smith took the stage alongside Petras after the duo was deemed the winners, but stepped to the side when it came time for a speech to allow Petras her moment in the spotlight. See a real-time list of tonight’s winners here.
During the acceptance speech, Petras earned a standing ovation from several of her peers acknowledging her history-making win. She also expressed great thanks for the many LGBTQ+ artists who paved the way for her and provided inspiration including Madonna and the late SOPHIE.
Ahead of receiving their award, Petras and Smith walked the red carpet in style as they wore coordinating red outfits with “Unholy” music video co-stars, Gottmik and Violet Chachki from RuPaul’s Drag Race.
Smith and Petras also performed the GRAMMY-winning single during Sunday’s show. They join other live performers, Bad Bunny, Mary J. Blige, Brandi Carlile, Luke Combs, Steve Lacy, Lizzo, Harry Styles and more.
