Thanks to Lady Gaga and the city of West Hollywood, May 23 will now be marked as annual “Born This Way Day.”
On Sunday Gaga’s album, Born This Way, turned 10 years old and the superstar celebrated the landmark anniversary with a trip to WeHo, where she was awarded a key to the city by Mayor Lindsey P. Horvath.
Additionally, a street mural on Robertson Boulevard, adjacent to the landmark LGBTQ bar, The Abbey, was painted on the street to kick off West Hollywood’s Pride season. The mural reads “Born This Way” and is painted to signify the colors of the pride flag.
Clad in a t-shirt, fishnet tights and her signature Chromatica era fuchsia, platform boots, Gaga visited The Abbey to celebrate with adoring fans and sprawled out across the freshly painted street art.
Mayor Harovath addressed Gaga and said, “Thank you for encouraging us to love ourselves and be proud.”
Gaga took to Instagram to share the prideful moment and explained, “Born This Way, my song and album, were inspired by Carl Bean, a gay Black religious activist who preached, sung, and wrote about being ‘Born This Way.’ Notably, his early work was in 1975, 11 years before I was born.” She continued, “Thank you for decades of relentless love, bravery, and a reason to sing. So we can all feel joy, because we deserve joy. Because we deserve the right to inspire tolerance, acceptance, and freedom for all.”
