Lately, the 23-year-old rapper has spent most of her time rehearsing for the practically sold-out show. While taking a break at home, Latto chatted with Audacy’s DJ Buck & Friends about her smash single “Big Energy.” The young artist also discussed her new song “Wheelie.”

“Big Energy” is Latto’s first Top 40 record, receiving tons of airplay on rhythmic radio. It has also hit number one on music discovery app Shazam. “...I knew that it was a new sound for me,” Latto tells DJ Buck & Friends. “It was a fresh sound. When I play the radio, I don't hear nothing that sounds like this.”

Latto says she definitely wanted to push herself to do something different musically. “I really had to put on my captain hat and make a decision like ‘I don’t give a f**** what people think.’ I’m gonna’ do me,” said Latto. “I don’t ever want to stay in my comfort zone… when you hear that song it’s undeniable.”

Many were first introduced to Big Latto during season one of The Rap Game, presented by Jermaine Dupri. Latto won the competition series at just 16 years old. But rather than signing to So So Def, Dupri’s record label, she remained an independent artist. “…I ended up just taking the grind route. Went in grind mode, recording, dropping music videos back to back”, said Latto.

She eventually signed a distribution deal with StreamCut and dropped “B**** From Da Souf,” which was later remixed with Trina and Saweetie. The catchy record grabbed the attention of RCA and the rest is history!

Latto’s imminent single “Wheelie” is a track for her core fan base. She describes it as a “ratchet summer vibes” twerk song. The snippet has already sparked a TikTok challenge ahead of its official release. “I’m all about balance. I don’t ever want to be too Pop or too street. I’m a woman of multiple talents,” she explained. The “Muwop” rapper promises that her next album will be experimental with “different flows” and “different beats”.
