The top-charting record is off Lizzo’s latest album Special, and marks the singer-songwriter’s second No. 1 single. “We got the #1 song in the country ya’ll,” Lizzo tweeted recently. “About Damn Time” follows 2019’s “Truth Hurts,” which spent seven weeks on the chart. According to Switched on Pop, the new hit song is definitely deserving of the number one spot, with retro instrumentation, a propulsive groove, meme-worthy lyrics.
The experts, musicologist Nate Sloan, songwriter Charlie Harding, and producer Reanna Cruz, break down the song’s composition. They also acknowledge popular techniques from the Dance and Disco era such as layering all of the instruments together. “We have that funky slap bass…and we have this exciting rhythmic contrast,” said musicologist Nate Sloan. “She wants this song, this album, to be rhythmically explosive.”
The latest Switched on Pop episode also covers Lizzo’s musical growth and her Special tracks like "Coldplay" and "Grrrls."
