On Instagram, during Giving Tuesday, the American Idol judge announced the Brett Boyer Foundation, which aims to help raise awareness and fund research around congenital heart disease. The video in the post is in honor of his late niece Sadie Brett Boyer, known as Brett. Brett was the daughter of Luke’s brother-in-law, Bo Boyer.
The foundation also raises awareness around Down Syndrome, which Boyer also had. In his caption, Luke writes, “I’m proud to be a part of this video that has been a long time in the making. Join the battle and help us raise awareness and fund research for Congenital Heart Disease. @brightforbrett #GivingTuesday"
In the video, Bryan tells us that Brett was “vivid as neon, bright as the sun, full of color and joy.” He continues, “The gift we didn’t know we needed so badly. I have good memories, saved in color in my mind.” But Luke also tells us that it is painful to remember his niece’s battle with CHD. The Country singer also explains that CHD is “more common than all forms of childhood cancer combined.” However, the funding for CHD research is “ten times less.”
