Tony Shalhoub has disclosed he and his wife Brooke Adams had a “rough few weeks” battling coronavirus.
The “Monk” star made the COVID-19 disclosure during an appearance on Seth MacFarlane’s “Peacock Presents At-Home Variety Show," where Shalhoub reprised the sitcom’s titular germaphobe character.
“Hi, I’m Tony Shalhoub, I hope you’re all being careful and following the protocol,” the 66-year-old began. “We really are all Monk now.”
He continued: “Last month, my wife Brooke and I came down with the virus and it was a pretty rough few weeks, but we realize that so many other people have and had it a lot worse.”
Since recovering, Shalhoub now partakes in the nightly ritual of giving thanks to New York City healthcare workers by applauding and cheering for them from windows and balconies at 7pm.
"Time to go out and show our appreciation to all our heroes -- the health care workers, the first responders. Let's go. Stay safe and stay sane," the actor said.
Shalhoub, who currently stars on "The Marvelous and Mrs. Maisel," and Adams now join Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson as the latest celebrity couple to publicly disclose their COVID-19 diagnosis.
In March, Hanks and Wilson became one of the first celebrities to reveal they had contracted the novel virus while they were in Australia. After quarantining for several weeks abroad, the pair returned to their home in Los Angeles where they continue to maintain social distancing protocols as part of the stay-at-home order.
Additional episodes of “Peacock Presents At-Home Variety Show” are set to air nightly over the next four weeks in hopes of raising awareness and money for essential workers.
