During her interview with Elle, as their May 2021 cover girl, Olivia opened up about life after her breakout single “drivers license” took the world by storm after its January 8 debut.
In just these few short months since, Rodrigo has basically become Taylor Swift’s new bff, a chart topping record breaker and the girl no one can stop talking about, particularly when it comes to her love life and lyrics. Plucked from general Disney+ series obscurity, it is in fact her High School Musical: The Musical: The Series co-star and rumored ex-boyfriend Joshua Bassett, the buzz is all about.
Many believed that the popular breakup anthem’s lyrics pointed directly at Bassett and his rumored girlfriend, also Disney starlet Sabrina Carpenter. Particularly with the telling line, “And you're probably with that blonde girl/ Who always made me doubt/ She's so much older than me/ She's everything I'm insecure about.” And while fans theorized about who the track could be about, Olivia was quietly enjoying the lyrical connection she had created.
"It’s truly any songwriter’s dream," she told the outlet, adding how much she admired that listeners of all ages had connected to how she got her feelings off her chest and bared her heart throughout the melancholy ballad. "There’s something so powerful in being vulnerable and open, like, 'This is my life, and I’m f***ing sad.' Or, 'I’m insecure.' That’s what makes songwriting so special.”
Despite her already mega success, Olivia is far from finished, already having released her follow up single “deja vu,” which will also be featured on her upcoming debut album SOUR, set to drop on May 21. "I thought I was going to be really in my head, like, 'I’m never going to write a song as good as that again,'" she confessed. "This song has given me a lot of confidence in my voice.”
In other dream related news, Rodrigo has a pretty impressive list of fellow songwriting mavens would love to collaborate with. The 18-year-old shared the dream list, admitting she has a shrine dedicated to her favorites; Taylor Swift, Gwen Stefani, Gracie Abrams and Alanis Morissette, whom she related her album vibes to. But despite not having a devoted sacred space for the following, her "dream collaboration" is Billie Eilish.
"I think it would be really cool to collaborate with Billie Eilish. I think everything she does is just so spectacular," Rodrigo said while playing Elle's Song Association game. "I love her first EP Don't Smile at Me, I just feel so deeply in love with that project. I love 'My Boy,' like I think that song is so genius and clever and fun.”
