Holy Macanoli! “Punky Brewster” is all grown up!
33 years after going off the air, Soleil Moon Frye is back portraying the iconic character in the first trailer for the Peacock reboot of the original ‘80s series.
In the update, Punky is now a photographer and mother of three adapting to her newly single life following her divorce, reported Deadline.
Drawing on her experiences being raised by a foster dad, Punky is reminded of her upbringing upon meeting a young orphan named Izzy. Punky decides to have Izzy move in with her family ,while her best friend Cherie (played by original star Cherie Johnson) tries to find the orphan a permanent home.
The clip also sees Punky balance raising her kids alongside ex-husband Travis, played by “She’s All That” hunk Freddie Prinze Jr.
Fans can rest assured knowing even though many years have passed, the vibrant character is “still punk” and dons different colored Chucks to prove it.
Premiering in 1984, “Punky Brewster” aired for two seasons on NBC before going on for two more in syndication. It’s final episode aired in May 1988.
Last year, NBC’s new streaming service Peacock announced they were moving forward with the revival of the series.
Frye, 44, has expressed her elation over getting to reprise the role.
“I am beyond thrilled and honored to be bringing Punky back!” I’m grateful to our NBCUniversal Content Studios and Peacock family and to our incredible team of creators, writers, producers, cast and crew that have put their hearts into this journey every step of the way,” Frye said.
Earlier this week, Frye announced “Can’t Hardly Wait” star Seth Green would also be appearing in the reboot.
“One of my lifelong closest friends @sethgreen is joining me on #PunkyBrewster!” she captioned a snap alongside Green. “We have been friends forever and I can’t wait for you to watch us.”
All ten episodes of the “Punky Brewster” revival will start streaming February 25th on Peacock.
