Olivia Pope has assembled her gladiators for International Women’s Day.
“Scandal” stars Kerry Washington (Olivia Pope), Bellamy Young (Mellie Grant), Katie Lowes (Quinn Perkins) and the show’s creator Shonda Rhimes reunited to film a PSA for CARE, an anti-poverty humanitarian charity, in support of Sunday being International Women’s Day.
This year’s theme is #EachforEqual, which encourages men and women to take action to bring about gender equality in the world.
"Some people would say I don't belong here," Washington says at the top of the video.
"Some people would say a woman can't be president," adds Young, who is a CARE ambassador.
"That women can't be both mothers and leaders," Lowes continues.
"That a Congresswoman shouldn't wear a headscarf," Rhimes comments.
The four women add, “Around the world, we get paid less; when food is scarce, we eat less; in emergencies, we come last. As girls, we’re pulled out of school first. And worst of all, when it comes to assault and sexual violence, too often we are ridiculed, pushed to the side, and not believed.”
“But I won’t stand for that,” Washington declares.
At the end of the 90 second video, Rhimes urges everyone to sign the petition to make women equal.
Washington shared the video and included the caption: “I spent 7 years on Scandal surrounded by AMAZING women. A few of us came together in support of the important work that @CARE is doing around the world to stand up for women everywhere. #WomenEqual."
Co-star Darby Stanfield, who played Abby Whelan, was not part of the PSA but sent her best wishes by commenting, “Love you all” and added five red heart emojis.
The cast reunion for a good cause comes nearly two years after the ABC series went off the air.
Premiering in 2012, “Scandal” aired 124 episodes over seven seasons before signing off in April 2018.
Created over a century ago, International Women’s Day was first recognized by the United Nations in 1975 to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women and to accelerate their equality.
