The USC marching band is one of the hippest in the land, and they knew what they had to do when one of the biggest rock reunions in recent memory was about to go down in their own backyard.

The Spirit of Troy gave My Chemical Romance a grand welcome with a performance of “Welcome to the Black Parade” the morning before MCR’s first show in seven years. The horn section kicked things off with the notes that usually accompany the lyrics “When I was a young boy, my father took me into the city, to see a marching band.”

My Chemical Romance’s manager posted the video on Instagram with the caption “See you tonight!! #Return @mychemical romance #theshrineauditorium."

According to some fans who were lucky enough to be in attendance, My Chemical Romance performed 20 songs during their only scheduled gig of 2019.

Gerard Way, Mikey Way, Frank Iero, and Ray Toro kicked things off with “I’m Not Okay (I Promise)” from 2004’s Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge and relied heavily on that album, The Black Parade and Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys throughout the night. The show ended with “Welcome to the Black Parade” as the second encore.

My Chemical Romance isn’t done yet. They’ll head to New Zealand, Australia and Japan for five shows in March, and we have to believe there’s more to come.
