Netflix just dropped the trailer for their new reality dating show, “Sexy Beasts,” and it is the dictionary definition of a hoot.
The premise, according to Cnet, is one of those “hide the face to get to know the personality first” deals. Only this time, instead of being trapped in pods or what have you, the contestants are made up in incredibly detailed beastly outfits.
One thing is for sure from the hilarious trailer — if the amazingly intricate, sci-fi blockbuster quality outfits are any indication, the contestants can all be sure their date is a very, very patient person. It looks like they’ve sat in a makeup artist’s chair for five hours before going off to bowl, eat at a restaurant, and even lip lock in full costume.
The headpieces alone make “The Masked Singer” pull-off-ers look positively comfortable.
Immediately billed as “the strangest blind date ever,” it is quick to prove just that. With beast people riding around in horse-drawn carriages and screaming on rollercoasters, and a panda asking a goat if he has health insurance, the trailer sets the phone for the funny, odd and unpredictable series.
Actually, the whole masked thing was serendipitous, as the series was filmed last year during the pandemic.
The few unmasked reveals glimpsed in the trailer show the contestants don’t have to worry that there’s a monster underneath the intricate costumes.
The concept originated on the BBC in 2014, and Netflix is giving it an American reboot. Scenes for the series were filmed in both the UK and US.
“Sexy Beasts” premieres on Netflix July 21.
