Squash Players Take Over New York's Grand Central Station

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- A major sporting event has just wrapped up in New York City in the unlikeliest of places.

Imagine yourself in the middle of your commute at Grand Central Station when all of a sudden a squash tournament breaks out.

At the 22nd annual JP Morgan Chase Tournament of Championsit was balls to the wall in a glass box set up in Vanderbilt Hall.

"It's very random, that's why we just stopped and we were looking at it," one commuter said.

"It's great, it's a little bit surreal. It's like a mirage," another commuter said.

Five million people a day pass through the station, and tournament director John Nimick knows not everybody will watch, but people do stand five to six deep. There were also hundreds of tickets sold for actual seats.

"It is something truly special," said four-time national champion Amanda Sobhy, who grew up on Long Island. "You really don't get a better atmosphere or stage than that kind of New York City commuting vibe."

"For me it's the most amazing venue in the world. It's a really electric atmosphere," said Todd Harrity, the top-ranked American player.

Squash, a distant cousin of racquetball, has been described as chess on legs.

"You have to be powerful but also fast and agile," said Harrity.

The nine-day event wrapped up Thursday and if you missed the action, don't worry, it'll be back next year.
