Stamford-Based Americares Sending Out Medical Supplies To Florence-Battered Areas

STAMFORD, Conn. (WCBS 880/AP) -- Help for Hurricane Florence victims is streaming in from every direction – including Stamford, Connecticut, where Americares is located.

As WCBS 880's Peter Haskell reported, boxes of medical supplies have been stacked and wrapped and are ready to go.

Americares has been working on the supply boxes for more than a week – packing supplies from triple antibiotic ointment to Ibuprofen.

"As Hurricane Florence was developing, we were looking at our staff; preparing them to deploy," said Kate Dischino, vice president of emergency programs at Americares. "We were in the warehouse preparing medicine for medical supplies and getting our plans ready."

Six staffers are already in the Carolinas assessing what supplies will be needed next.

Florence had claimed at least 25 lives as of Monday evening, and an untold number of homes, on its slow march across North Carolina, inundating city after city in North Carolina.
