Joe is a GRAMMY Winner. He was credited for his work on Swift’s folklore album which released in July 2020 and took home the award for Album of the Year at the award show in March. Fans noticed his name had been added to the list of credit for the win on the GRAMMY’s website. So why don’t you see his name listed on the actual album?
Joe was credited on the actual album under the pseudonym William Bowery. Swift confirmed this information (which fans had already speculated) during an interview in the documentary Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions, which aired on Disney+.
"There's been a lot of discussion about William Bowery and his identity because it's not a real person,” said Swift. “So William Bowery is Joe, as we know. And Joe plays piano beautifully and he's always just playing and making things up and kind of creating things.”
The news didn’t come as much of a surprise to the most elite Taylor fans who speculated that William Bowery was in fact Joe Alwyn before it was confirmed by Taylor. They did some (intense) digging and found Joe’s great grandfather, who was a music teacher, was named William and they also believed Bowery came from the Bowery Hotel where the couple was spotted early in their relationship in 2016.
Alwyn and Swift reportedly spent a lot of time together during quarantine which resulted in many new songs crafted together. Alwyn co-wrote two of the songs on the album and co-produced six. He even received a shoutout in Taylor’s acceptance speech.
“Joe is the first person that I play every single song that I write, and I had the best time writing songs with you in quarantine.”
