According to court testimony, the rapper was killed by a 15-year-old with a group of teens who "ambushed" him while at an Airbnb in the Hollywood Hills. The group aimed to steal Pop Smoke's diamond Rolex, in which they later sold for $2K. They were also after his Cuban link chain, but their attempts were unsuccessful.
The gunman was the youngest among the group and is facing murder and robbery charges after allegedly admitting to his crimes in a recorded interview with a cellmate last May. LAPD Detective Carlos Camacho revealed, "they got into a fight, and he shot him three times. He said he shot him on the back."
Corey Walker was the sole adult in the case, and the getaway driver. His lawyer, Christopher Darden, argued over his involvement, stating that he was just a driver and told the younger participants not to shoot anyone. Darden continued, "He’s clearly not an aider and abettor of premeditated murder. At most, he’s a principal in a robbery... He’s a driver. He is outside."
Public testimony for the case began last Thursday. It was also revealed that the assailants discovered Pop Smoke's whereabouts after his location was accidentally posted on his Instagram. The rapper suffered a "rapid decline" after being shot and couldn't be saved. If convicted, Walker could face the death penalty. He's due back in court for a secondary arraignment on June 3.
