Facebook could begin deleting accounts where users have repeatedly fat-shamed Lizzo online, particularly after the debut of her latest single, "Rumors."
In the new track, which arrived, August 13, the singer crafts her lyrics around the fact that her appearance and actions are always discussed in public forums and she is often hyper-criticized.
Joined by Cardi B on "Rumors," Lizzo has recently been inundated with a slew of online hate, related to weight and racism.
During an Instagram live session, the artist shared through tears, “sometimes I feel like the world just don’t love me back.” On TikTok, she created a video calling out the racist “Mammy” trope often used against her.
She said, “these people who are saying this are probably the same people who are mad when I’m being hyper sexual and the mammy trope is actually completely desexualized.”
Cardi was quick to support Lizzo on Twitter, retweeting a clip of the “Truth Hurts” singer’s IG live video, and writing, “When you stand up for yourself they claim your problematic & sensitive. When you don’t they tear you apart until you crying like this. Whether you skinny, big, plastic, they going to always try to put their insecurities on you. Remember these are nerds looking at the popular table.”
Lizzo added, “So it can’t both be true — make it make sense. I really think people are just mad to see a fat Black woman that makes pop music and is happy.”
TMZ reports that Facebook has been supporting the singer by going through comments on her Facebook and Instagram page and deleting ones that are derogatory and violate the company’s hate speech, harassment, and bullying policy.
Cardi took to Twitter again over the weekend to stand by Lizzo, writing, “Rumors is doing great. Stop trying to say the song is flopping to dismiss a woman emotions on bullying or acting like they need sympathy. The song is top 10 on all platforms. Body shaming and callin her mammy is mean & racist as f***.”
