Tropics poppin' in the Atlantic and Caribbean

While Hurricane Florence is by far the biggest concern now, there is plenty of other activity in the tropics.

"It's busy... here in the Hurricane Center's operation center, we're issuing the forecasts for a very busy tropics," Director Ken Graham said.

Florence could cause catastrophic impacts making landfall as a major hurricane in the Carolinas and then impacting much of the eastern US.

Forecasters are also watching Isaac, Helene and two areas of possible development.

One, in the Caribbean could cause trouble in the Gulf.

"That could be headed into the Gulf of Mexico and bring some rainfall into Texas," Graham said.

The Hurricane Center gives that disturbance a 60% chance of development over the next five days.  Most of the computer models bring the system south of Houston.

Hurricane Helene is expected to stay out over open water in the foreseeable future.

Another area in the central Atlantic has a 50% development chance.

The next name on the list of Atlantic basin storms is Joyce.

"We'll be here 24 hours a day keeping an eye on plenty of hurricanes and getting the latest information to you all," Graham said.

In the Pacific meanwhile, they are watching Tropical Storm Olivia headed for Hawaii and a tropical depression out at sea.
