“I don’t think anybody in January would have been like, ‘hey I bet Walker Hayes is going to have a massive song this year that everybody does a dance to around the world.’”
That was the response Walker Hayes had when he was asked to reflect on the success “Fancy Like” has had since its release. It’s an on-point response and goes to show just how far he’s come in 2021.
Hayes joined Coop on Coop’s Rockin’ Country Saturday Night for an extensive conversation, which you can listen to in its entirety above.
Walker has had hit songs before, but up until “Fancy Like,” a number one has evaded him. “I’ve been here 17 years,” Walker said of his time since moving to Nashville. "I think it could quite possibly be the hardest thing I’ve ever done.”
While “Fancy Like” has had some hilarious lyrical misconceptions, Hayes is proud to admit the lyrics ring true in his personal life.

“It could not be more true to life,” he said. “That is our family. Like, last night we went to Chick-Fil-A, that’s my fancy, but we love it.”
“If we go to Applebees, that’s a big deal,” he added. “That’s a lot of money for my family and six kids. Apparently, a lot of people can relate.”
“Fancy Like” has spawned numerous dances on social media, something that Hayes is still amazed by. Hayes said he and his daughter “captured lightning in a bottle that day we did the first dance.”
“We had no clue we were setting trends. We were just being idiots, having some fun, and now, I’ve noticed a ton of Country artists doing dances and stuff. I love it! I think it’s freaking awesome.”

With a number one single under his belt, Hayes continues to have his sights set high for what comes next. “I was telling somebody yesterday that I’ve never had a little dream in my life. I’m the most unrealistic dreamer ever,” he said.
What does that represent? “Goal wise, I want to be playing arenas,” Walker said. “As soon as I’m playing arenas, I definitely have my eye on playing stadiums.”
Displaying one of his many smile-inducing laughs, Walker added “but dude, I basically just said I’m going to be Kenny Chesney in a couple years. But Kenny Chesney woke up one day and said ‘I’m going to be Kenny Chesney,’ so why can’t I?”
