Celebrating 30 years as a band, and doing so with a hit single on the radio and a tour, admittedly 'seems crazy' to Adam

Joining Audacy’s Taryn Daly today for a special Check In is Adam Duritz of Counting Crows as the band gets ready to hit the road on their summer Butter Miracle Tour running into early October.

After releasing their new album, Butter Miracle: Suite 1,  back in May, their first offering in seven years, the band simply can't wait to hit the road to see smiling faces in the crowd once again -- and now it's all about to kick off this week!

Of the over 30 stops they’ll be making on the tour, Adam says the band is making a stop in Berkeley for the first time, his hometown, and at a venue very close to the house he lived in years ago. “The first time I played this venue,” he admits, “I walked home and to the show.” This time it will be a little bit different; “No walking to the show, he says. I live 3,000 miles away now.”

Adam says he began the writing process for the album in 2019 while staying on a friend’s farm in England. He rented a keyboard and got some ideas out, each of which seemed to blend into the next. After finalizing those ideas in early 2020, the band got together in the studio in February. Then, the pandemic hit.

“We got delayed a few months while we were sort of figured out how to finish it up,” he says, “but we were done by July. Then we were sort of taking our time putting the album package together, because there was no rush to release it right then.”

During quarantine, Adam had taken an interest in the kitchen, sharing his experiences on social media. “I’ve always cooked since I was a kid and I was pretty good,” he explains. “About a month into the pandemic I went to my girlfriend and said, ‘I’m afraid I’m gonna wake up in a year and a half from now and won’t have done anything. I don’t wanna do that, I think I’m gonna learn to cook everything.’ I learned to cook all kinds of stuff… I just worked on anything that interested me. I would read a ton, and then I would put a recipe together.”

“It was just something to do because I couldn’t do anything else. We couldn’t do our podcast, we couldn’t tour. Obviously, I haven’t done it in a little while because we’ve been busy with the record and now I’m leaving in a couple of days to go on tour.”

Now (unofficially) celebrating 30 years as a band, and doing so with a hit single on the radio and a tour, admittedly “seems crazy” to Adam. “Most bands either kill each other by now or the entire world becomes so disinterested in them that it doesn’t matter. But here we are... we’ve got a song, it’s a hit at radio… I don’t know how to digest that, honestly."
